Programs and Other Activities
| Children Tours: |
Every couple of months we are trying to arrange a special tour with the shanti kids and street kids to different interesting places where they can have fun, play, enjoy and learn something.
So far we went to see Pondicherry, Auroville, Ginge, Mahabalipuram, Chennai, Sathanur dam, VGP golden beach, Golden Temple(Vellore), Vellore Fort, Water Park(Arcot), a cultural museum called “Dakshina Chitra” (www.dakshinachitra.net), to one of the biggest amusement parks, "MGM Dizzee world" in Chennai (www.mgmdizzeeworld.com), etc.,
| Dance Evenings: |
Every month we arrange a dance evening in out tuition centre. We play different tamil music and let the kids dance alone and in groups. Sometimes they also do singing and storytelling.
| Arts & Crafts: |
Often we arrange some art craft hours to let the kids learn things other than the school subjects. They learn to build little things and have some valuable time with us. Also once in a while some friends and volunteers come here to help the kids with some art classes. They teach and let them paint / draw / build different things.
| Games & Shows: |
We built a small play ground for the street kids where they could come and play in the swing and on the slide or the wooden play house. The kids mostly come in the weekends and have fun. Also sometimes we visit other big playground and nature park situated under the holy mountain Arunachala.
Other than this we also have various shows for the kids from time to time. Recently we had a nice magic show by the Director of funforlife.org Mr. Dragon and it was huge success. So, we are thinking of arranging more different shows for the kids in the future.
| Music & Movies: |
We did few music classes for the kids. Some volunteers come here to teach the kids some vocal singing and dancing. They come to our tuition centre every two weekends and do some yoga and dance movements along with the kids singing, dancing, jumping and relaxing. They come only in the winter months from September to March.
This year we got a projector as a donation for the project and we are using it now once or twice every month to show some good educational and fun movies to the kids on a big screen. And they are having such a great fun watching movies on the big screen.
| Festival Celebrations: |
We have so many religious and cultural festivals in India. And we celebrate them with the poor kids. Like the Diwali (Famous Indian Hindu festival to celebrate with lot of fireworks) and Christmas (We arrange someone to act as Santa Claus and distribute some gifts for the kids. Also we will be having some storytelling, dance and singing with dinner).
| Other Activities: |
As the computer knowledge is important now at present and the future, this summer onwards we started giving some basic computer lessons for the grown up kids (8th-12th class). They are very eager to learn and work with computers.
Also we did some ecological work with the name "Arunachala Cleaning Project", we take the children to the holy mountain Arunachala and pick up the plastic, papers and some waste to clean the path and around.
